2021 OER Grantees

Remixing Open Textbooks through an Equity Lens (ROTEL)

The six Massachusetts Institutions of Higher Education along with the MA Department of Higher Education will test the hypothesis that underrepresented students will achieve higher academic outcomes if free, culturally-relevant textbooks are available to them. The project will pay stipends to faculty to create new OER or adapt and remix existing OER content using an equity lens. The team will pilot this project in the six public colleges and universities, and evaluate student success outcomes.

Minesota State University

The United States Department of Education has awarded Minnesota State a three-year grant totaling $978,332, helping to increase the diversity of the teacher education pipeline across Minnesota. The pilot will create open textbooks and open educational resources (OER) for core teacher education courses that will provide significant savings for students while maintaining or improving student learning outcomes. Total annual savings for students in Minnesota State teacher education programs are estimated to be $420,000 and $627,000 per year.

Illinois SCOERs

Illinois SCOERs (Support for Creation of Open Educational Resources) will develop, improve, and expand open educational resources by focusing on “The Human Condition: Care, Development, and Lifespan.” Project participants will create a minimum of eight open textbooks paired with ancillary materials for teachers and students.

The Clemson University

CO-DREAM OER will develop three textbooks, as well as ancillary materials on robotics education for associate level, undergraduate and masters programs in South Carolina. The project also involves research on the learning behavior of students in these programs, making sure that the textbooks produced will support their academic success.

2020 OER Grantees

CC ECHO

The CC ECHO consortium, made up of four California community colleges, will work together to create culturally relevant OER materials for 20 courses. Courses selected are those that are lacking quality OER and are in the top one-third of enrollment at the consortium colleges. Looking through the lens of diversity, equity, and inclusion, each OER that is developed will have some element of DEI woven into the subject matter. The OER created by this project is expected to save students at least $2,214,216 by the end of 2023. Read the project abstract for more details.

Middlesex County College

The Open Textbook Collaborative (OTC) project, funded through the US Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education program in January 2021, is a statewide project, by Middlesex College with Brookdale Community College, Ocean County College, Passaic County Community College, and Rowan University. Through this project, the Project Team creates a community college-led, state-wide collaborative in New Jersey to fill an important need for open textbooks and other learning resources.

Louisiana Board of Regents

LOUIS’ Interactive OER for Dual Enrollment project, funded by a $2 million Open Textbooks Pilot Program grant from the Department of Education, supports the extension of access to high-quality post-secondary opportunities to high school students across Louisiana and beyond. This project features a collaboration between educational systems in Louisiana, the library community, Pressbooks technology partner, and workforce representatives. It will enable and enhance the delivery of open educational resources (OER) and interactive quiz and assessment elements for priority dual enrollment courses in Louisiana and nationally.

2019 OER Grantees

Arizona Board of Regents

OpenSkill develops open educational resources that foster essential workforce skills as part of a $3.4M funded program by the U.S. Department of Education. The development team includes Arizona State University’s Center for Education Through Exploration (ETX) and three community college partners: Maricopa Community Colleges, Ivy Tech Community College, and Miami Dade College. Through these partnerships, OpenSkill has curated OER for specific subjects and developed LMS tools that build essential skills through active and project-based learning applications. OpenSkill OER + tools offer a low-cost alternative to expensive student course materials.

Chippewa Valley Technical College

In 2013, CVTC was a pioneer in the development and use of Open Educational Resources (OER). OER are publicly available learning and research tools, including modules, textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and other resources. CVTC is committed to improving college access and affordability for all students. The growing use of OER for online, face-to-face, and remote learning improves CVTC’s ability to reduce one of the greatest barriers to higher education.

2018 OER Grantees

The Regents of the University of California (Davis)

The U.S. Department of Education has awarded $4.9 million to the LibreTexts consortium, led by UC Davis, to expand its library of free online STEM textbooks and educational resources. LibreTexts, a national consortium including universities and community colleges across the country, produces a series of linked online libraries that replace conventional textbooks and course materials.
